Jazz trio of the Armenian school

By Maral Hamboyian

Kuwait’s Armenian Relief Society’s (ARS) branch presented a successful cultural evening to the art lovers of Kuwait, on Friday 30 October 2009, at 8:00pm in the “Private Schools’ Theatre”, under the patronage of the His Eminence Archbishop Goriun Babian, Catholicosal Vicar of the Prelacy of Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf Countries. H.E. Vahagn Melikian, the Republic of Armenia non-resident Ambassador to Kuwait was also present.

First, both national anthems of Kuwait and Armenia were played, then Alvart  Bablanian gave a speech on behalf of the Branch, where she mentioned ARS activities in Kuwait, that focus on introducing the rich Armenian culture to the youth. She stressed out the importance of keeping this policy alive.

Master of ceremony Mayda Movsesian introduced the details of the program to the audience with proper remarks.

The audience got enthusiastic when Shakeh dance group took the stage with their “Mogats Harser “ dance (directed by  Anna Manougian). The ladies grabbed the attention of the audience with their amazing moves and beautiful uniforms.

Three students from the secondary grades amazed the audience with beautiful Armenian jazz compositions (keyboards: Patil Zakarian, Guitar: Armando Bablanian, drums: Michele Karakash). The audience really appreciated the newborn band’s first performance.

Mher Minasian, a well known singer from Aleppo, presented beautiful Armenian songs by Sayat Nova, Havas and Sheram, with Hovig Adourian on keyboards. The songs pleased the attendants and further warmed the atmosphere.

The second part of the program started with “Read the Tableau” comedy performance (director Berj Shahbazian), who -  in the last months- did his best to rejuvenate the art of theatrical performances in the Armenian community of Kuwait. Actors with promising skills played their parts well enough and caused loud laughter in the hall.

At the end of the cultural event, Mher Minassian took the stage once again , the atmosphere was so exciting that all the attendants cheered and joined the singer with singing and dancing along .

At the end, His Eminency Archbishop Goriun Babian took the stage to sum the evening up with his thoughtful words. After greeting the attendants, he highly appreciated the ARS committee and all those who dedicated themselves to convey the message of art and culture to the public. He addressed the audience and asked them to be conscious and to continue supporting the Armenian culture and national values.

I just got my notice that I will be moving to Kuwait in few weeks and am excited about my move and the fact that Kuwait has an Armenian community and a church.

I am a civil engineer and I will be stationed at the Abu Al Salem Air Base. I would appreciate any information about the Armenian community and their agenda.

Please send replies to gavedissian[at]gmail.com.

Thank you and best regards, Krikor
